Jr. Spotlighters Program Description
Star of the Day is committed to nurturing the talents of the community’s young artists. We’ll explore storytelling through creative writing, music, movement, acting, and character-building. The Jr. Spotlighters program also helps to boost social and emotional skills along with problem-solving and critical thinking skills. While the students are expected to work hard, we also guarantee loads of fun!
No experience necessary…only the willingness to try and have a blast!
Theatre is a fundamental way of exploring and knowing the world. Through imitation, children use this information to begin to figure out their own identities through activities such as dramatic play.
The focus of the Jr. Spotlighters program is creative drama - imagine, enact, and reflect, Rhythm and Music exploration, and movement. Creative drama uses literature, history, and current events to spark students’ imaginations and original thinking. The skills and knowledge of creative drama are carefully structured to build perceptual and communication skills. Rhythm and Music helps with mind/body connection. We’ll explore different genres of music and how our emotions are affected by each. Movement classes will help student become more attuned to their body’s natural movement from muscle to muscle and limb to limb.
Young students:
•Imitate and re-create the world around them
•Develop body awareness and sensory and emotional perception
•Gain deeper understanding of themselves, others, and the environment
•Explore sound and space
•Use expressive, rhythmic movement.

ANTI-BULLYING/ANTI-RACISM CODE OF CONDUCT
ANTI-BULLYING/ANTI-RACISM AGREEMENT FOR STUDENTS & PARENTS
We the actors/parents of Virtual Spotlight Academy agree to join together to stamp out bullying at our theater. We believe that everybody should enjoy our theater equally, and feel safe, secure, and accepted regardless of color, race, gender, popularity, athletic ability, intelligence, religion, and nationality. Bullying can be pushing, shoving, hitting, and spitting, as well as name calling, picking on, making fun of, laughing at, and excluding someone. Bullying causes pain and stress to victims and is never justified or excusable as ‘kids being kids’, ‘just teasing’, or any other rationalization. The victim is never responsible for being a target of bullying. By signing this pledge, we the STUDENTS agree to:
1. Value others’ differences and treat others with respect.
2. Not become involved in bullying incidents or be a bully.
3. Be aware of the theater’s policies and support system with regard to bullying.
4. Report honestly and immediately all incidents of bullying to a staff member.
5. Be alert in places around the theater where there is less adult supervision such as bathrooms, corridors, and stairwells.
6. Support actors who have been or are subjected to bullying.
7. Talk to staff and parents about concerns and issues regarding bullying.
8. Work with other actors and staff to help the theater effectively deal with bullying.
9. Encourage staff to discuss bullying issues in rehearsal.
10. Provide a good role model for younger actors and support them if bullying occurs.
I acknowledge that whether I am being a bully or see someone being bullied, if I don’t report or stop the bullying, I am just as guilty.
By signing this pledge, we the PARENTS agree to:
1. Keep themselves and their children informed and aware of theater bullying policies.
2. Work in partnership with the theater to encourage positive behavior, valuing differences and promoting sensitivity to others.
3. Discuss regularly with their children their feelings about school, rehearsal, friendships, and relationships.
4. Inform staff of changes in their children’s behavior or circumstances at home that may change a child’s behavior at rehearsal.
5. Alert staff if any bullying has occurred.
